the heart's memory

I wish that I could take credit for these words. I stumbled on them when looking at artwork, and they spoke to me more than the artwork itself. Thank you, unknown author, for writing my heart.

"With time I realized that the heart's memory has the tendency to eliminate the bad and magnify the good. But when something bad happens, nice memories seem to slip through your fingers while unhappy ones become persistent, little ghosts that tear you open and leave you in pieces. Those memories will keep floating back again and again unless you do something more than cover the wound and hope for something, anything. Forgetting usually isn't enough, because the true problem of holding the memories is not the pain but the loneliness they reveal. As you may know, pain softens over time while loneliness becomes a burden you can't forget month after month. Maybe the best you can do is pick yourself up off the floor in the first place."
